Legend 

According to Greek Mythology, Argos was founded by Argos, the son of the god Zeus. The land became dry and arid after the gods Hera and Poseidon had an argument over the city. Hera won and became the patron of the city, but Poseidon got his revenge by drying out the land. 

Role in Persian  War 

 When Athens and Sparta were fighting the Persians,they asked for Argos to send troops and supplies for help. However, the king of Argos at that time, had refused to send anything to them. After that , the city-states held Argos at a disgrace

Notable people of Argos are Polykleitos who created the classical Greek style of sculptures. Also Pheidon was a king who established a system of weights and measures throughout  Peloponnesus.

Argos got its name from the one hundred eyed guardian, Argus. He  was bored to death by Hermes and his one hundred eyes were taken by Hera to decorate a peacock.
